So, what do you eat?

I think the question I get asked the most when I’ve been doing Keto is, “what do you eat?” I think when people hear 20g carbs per day their brain explodes and they assume you’re surviving on cheese wrapped in bacon.

First time I did Keto I made all. the. things. Like, if there was a keto substitute recipe for something – I was making it. Not to say that variety isn’t a good thing but that gets exhausting when you’re single, have a full time job, a social life and attempting to work out.

After that wore off, I found myself with a pretty decent menu each week and then would occasionally try something new. So, since I just went grocery shopping yesterday – here’s what I got:

  • Eggs
  • Bacon
  • Butter
  • Celery
  • Franks Buffalo Sauce
  • Sugar Free Ketchup
  • Celery
  • Salad Mix
  • Shredded Cheese
  • Cream Cheese
  • Low Carb Yogurt
  • Hamburger
  • Unsweetened Iced Tea
  • Bubbly Sparkling Water (Blackberry, Peach and Lime)
  • Jimmy Dean Sausage Scrambler Cup
  • Atkins Protein Bars
  • Atkins Protein Shakes

Now, this week I’ll take these ingredients along with some that I already had at home and make meals like:

  • Bacon and Eggs
  • Keto Pancakes (which reheat in a toaster beautifully)
  • Bunless Burgers and Veggies
  • Buffalo Wings with Ranch
  • Buffalo Chicken Dip with Celery for Dipping
  • Salads

Then as you can imagine I’ll have the protein bars and shakes as snacks or to supplement a meal. The drinks are just to add some variety to drinking plain water. I’ll probably eat this for a week or two and then add some variety. Maybe a steak or some cauliflower mash or a crustless pizza.

As far as dining out – I’m pretty good at finding nutritional information and making keto decisions when I’m out and about. The other night after curling I met up with friends at a bar and grill and had chislic (deep fried meat cubes essentially) and dipped it in ranch. Totally acceptable on keto.

In other news, keto is going well for day 2 – haha. This first week is always rough for me as my body is going through what sometimes feels like withdraw from junk food. Like, besides a little brain fog and my body asking constantly, “but where’s the side of fries?”

I also seem to have this heightened sensitivity to the smell of the food of my previous ways. How so, you may ask? Here’s a good example. Tonight as I was standing at the gas pump putting gas in my truck, a car pulls up and opens their door to get out and pump gas. I WAS CERTAIN I COULD SMELL LITTLE CAESAR’S PIZZA AND CRAZY BREAD (and I’m 99% sure they got an extra maraina… that’s how strong my sense of smell to junk food is right now) all the way where I was standing.

They open their passenger door to throw away some trash and I glance around the pump and what do I see – Little Caesar’s Pizza boxes and crazy bread on the front seat! Nailed it! Also, one of my co-worker’s today got onion rings and I’m pretty sure I smelled them when he got out of his car and I was sitting at my desk, inside, on the second floor. This new found heightened sense of smell only to junk food can go away at any time.

So other than that – it’s going great!
