Keto. Take 2.

Back at the beginning of 2017 I found myself standing on a scale that read 270 pounds. My friend from Canada, Christopher, had just agreed to run a half marathon with me in December of that year.

Let’s be real, 270 lbs on my frame meant I was out of breath just going up the flight of stairs to my apartment. A half marathon was out of the question. Yet here we are. Race registrations paid for, travel plans made, I had to do something.

So, I’ve attempted and failed many times before at losing weight. I feel like I’ve tried everything under the sun and I’ve biked, ran, CrossFitted and nothing seemed to work.

I turned to the internet because that’s what elder millennials like myself do when we need to figure something out. I found myself on reddit looking at weight loss progress pictures and success stories. Post after post of people losing dramatic weight who looked very much like me in their before picture and I would read in the comments that they were doing something called “keto”.

This lead down another rabbit trail that lead me to do my homework and I figured, well, I’ll give it 2 weeks. If I don’t lose – I’ll continue my research.

Long story short, I ended up losing almost 70lbs in 6 months and ran my fastest half marathon to date – yay! Then, life got crazy, I maintained my weight-loss for about 6 months after the race and then a cross country move and a new town where you eat to socialize and make new friends – I find myself now at 275.7 lbs…

South Dakota may be frigid in the winter but every day when I drive over a bridge that crosses the river – I’m reminded of warmer days in my kayak floating that river. You know, the kayak that has a 300 lbs weight limit.

I see the bike path that I like to ride and run in the summer. All which this last year I didn’t do enough of because my weight prohibited me.

So, after returning from Christmas break, I ate up the food I had in the house and yesterday I had an empty fridge ready for my next journey.

I went to Wal-Mart tonight and picked up my keto approved groceries. I’ll post more this week about the particulars and answer some FAQs that I seem to get a ton of.
