Techno Tuesday
So, something new I'm going to start for my geek readers is a feature posted every Tuesday that has to do with technology. I'm a Systems Administrator/Network Engineer by trade and I do a lot of searching the internet for my job. One thing I love about my job is that there is always a challenge. Sometimes it's nice to be in established environments that need just maintenance then sometimes it's a great learning experience to be admits a changing paradigm.
Today's links are some blogs that I've been checking out this week
1. You had me a EHLO
This is an awesome blog written and maintained by the Microsoft Exchange team. I find myself frequenting this blog a lot as my organization works on supporting our Microsoft Exchange 2007 environment. They also mention other Microsoft products, such as Microsoft Office Communications Server or OCS for short. Then you also have MOSS, Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server - something we're also working on implementing. For anyone who deals with Microsoft Exchange, this is something you must check out.
2. NetNerds.com
I stumbled across this when looking for Sharepoint websites. I began to read through the blog archives and see that there is a good bit of useful information here. Much of the information pertains to Microsoft products but the blog is very multifaceted in its content. It was here that I found the tool that is quickly changing how I do remote desktop. This tool is called "visionapp Remote Desktop (vRD 1.5)" you will find the product for FREE at the bottom of the link. Registration is required but is a small inconvenience for the power of this tool. It allows you to easily manage multiple remote desktop sessions, saves them, AND saves your credentials. This makes managing a large (and even smaller networks) a lot easier if you find yourself using multiple RDP sessions. So check out the tool and NetNerds.net.
That's about it for this first Techno Tuesday. Look here each Tuesday for some geek speak (or l33t speak for you uber geeks). I will also post original content on solutions to problems I've encountered and other technology I encounter on a daily basis in my job.
Take it easy,
- J

**Begin "Vangelis - Chariots of Fire" Music**
Imagine if you will K A T Y!!! (from JustKaty) leaving her apartment yesterday morning. Bounding down the steps she is ready for the day ahead of her. She locks her door and turns (slowly) as she prepares herself for a new day and the walk to the car. She majestically walks down the mighty concrete path and then leaps as she makes a perfect jump from the path to the ground and prepares to land. As she comes down gracefully for her perfect landing her foot encounters a small obstacle about the size of a golf ball. Trying to retain composure she throws her arms in the air and gracefully dismounts from this unseen obstacle in the road. All the time trying not to kiss the asphalt with her face. She recovers and the crowd gives her a standing ovation and the judges are impressed. Clearly at least a 9.5 all around.CRUNCH
**Abruptly END "Vangelis - Chariots of Fire" Music **
She then realizes that her ankle went left and her body went right and the pain is a sudden reminder that something wasn't right. Wincing in pain she tries to hold in the hurt and hobble to the car. Fast forward to a few hours later as I'm running around work trying to get stuff done. I read K A T Y!!! blog and we all had a good laugh. Then K A T Y!!! said she was home and had put ice on it. I called her after I got out of work and we discussed the situation. I told her that a trip to the ER would be advisable. As with most people I know (myself included) the thought of a hospital trip is never pleasant. I offered to come over and talk to her about it in person to see what we could do. Josh met me there with a bag of peas and some meds for the wounded. He stayed for a few minutes but had prior plans to attend to. Longer story shorter, I pushed until she agreed the ER would be the best thing to do. We head out for a quick bite to eat at Burger King and then hit the freeway to go to Riverside Hospital. We get there and find that it isn't a horrible wait and get into a triage room pretty quickly (not quick enough though when you're standing with a bum ankle... I'm sure K A T Y!!! thought it should have gone quicker). After fighting with a chair in the corner it finally reclined and K A T Y!!! could rest a little easier. She whipped out her book and I promptly realized I had nothing to entertain myself while we waited. I was quickly snapped out of it when I heard the words,"This chair smells... it smells like stale sweat... it smells like dirty men."I laughed then muttered
"It smells like 'hospital'..."Have you ever noticed all hospitals have that same smell. Maybe it's the smell of death or fear... I'm not sure, but they all have that distinct odor. Maybe that should be one of the car tree air freshener scent, "Hospital Smell".
"I have my iPod if you want to use it."I more than happily took the iPod as entertainment while we waiting. Now granted it was Hello Kitty pink with pink earbuds but I am more than man enough to sit there and use this pink iPod. Some blonde nurse that was clearly put out that she had to do work was the one who did K A T Y!!!'s vitals. After this we had some registration people come around and finally the head nurse who examined her foot. I'm sitting there contently listening to the wide variety of music she had placed on her iPod when the nurse came in to look at her foot. I paused the music and took the buds out to listen, in case something was asked/needed of me. To follow was a list of questions that started out as harmless... then went into the most prying details of someones life. I sat there and it was only by the grace of God I wasn't as red as red can be and the fact that I didn't burst out laughing at some of the questions/answers. I did have my normal "John Sheepish Grin" on my face though... K A T Y!!! kept glancing at me and just had this look on her face like, "Kill me now." After this we go and get some X-Rays of her foot. I am left in a new waiting room as she's in getting her pictures done. Well, I'm also left with her purse and I decide to listen to some music. As I grab her purse and get out this Hello Kitty Pink iPod with pink earbuds a couple walks up behind me and witnesses me doing this. So I think they were scared for whatever reason (homophobic maybe?) and they enter the tiny waiting room, holding hands, staring at me with a "dear in the headlights" look and scoot as far away from me as they can in this tiny room and then sit across from me and observe me. All I needed was some glass or bars and I would have felt as if I was in the zoo. I look up and they're both looking at me like they're terrified. I act as if I don't even notice them and continue to browse this music wonderland for something to listen to. Finally K A T Y!!! is ready to go to her examination room and we walk over and wait some more. Here a young man comes to the door and gathers additional information about her to update their registration records. Then the doctor comes in and says, "You have a severe sprained ankle. At least you didn't break anything." From here we meet the nurse who put the splint on K A T Y!!!'s foot and gave a lesson in fitting crutches to a patient and how to use them. She was quite jovial and I enjoyed the splash of happiness she brought to such a dull place. It's always nice for someone to make you laugh. There was a point at which wasn't so funny when the nurse jammed K A T Y!!!'s shoe onto her bad foot. K A T Y!!! was half trying not to cry and half laughing from the pain (why is it most people laugh when they're in severe pain? I do...). I thought she was going to pass out from the pain. From here we met this discharge nurse who was in an amazement that K A T Y!!! could do all this from stepping on a rock. From the sounds of it... I think K A T Y!!! may have been the story of the evening. Honestly, how many people come to the ER and say,
"I can't walk on my ankle because I stepped on a rock."So, then we leave and I push K A T Y!!! outside for us to go home. We get in the car and then head to Giant Eagle to get her prescription filled. This was an adventure as we tried to go across the store and K A T Y!!! was trying to learn how to use crutches. We got through this and I dropped her off to go home and sleep. This was my exciting night last night. Who knows what the rest of the week will hold. Later, - J
Marvelous Light by Charlie Hall
New song I picked up at church...
Verse 1
I once was fatherless,
a stranger with no hope;
Your kindness wakened me,
Awakened me, from my sleep
Verse 2
Your love it beckons deeply,
a call to come and die.
By grace now I will come
And take this life, take your life.
Pre-chorus
Sin has lost it's power,
death has lost it's sting.
From the grave you've risen
VICTORIOUSLY!
Chorus
Into marvelous light I'm running,
Out of darkness, out of shame.
By the cross you are the truth,
You are the life, you are the way
Verse 3
My dead heart now is beating,
My deepest stains now clean.
Your breath fills up my lungs.
Now I'm free. now I'm free!
Bridge
Lift my hands and spin around,
See the light that i have found.
Oh the marvelous light
Marvelous light
Lift my hands and spin
See the light within...
Regaining Focus
God has blessed me with some awesome career opportunities this year and I think I've found a company that I feel I can invest more than a few months to a year at (more like 5+ years at). I am not only finally being paid what I'm worth but also get to do so much more than I am used to and I learn something new every day.
With that being said, I've been toying with the idea of moving closer to work. I currently live in the southwest corner of the county and I'm thinking that north / northwest would be more suitable. Two years ago around this time when I began to look for a house, I didn't have the money to buy the type of house I wanted in this area so I moved to Grove City, OH. This has been a great place to live for the past two years and I believe it's time for a change. I'm tired of the neighborhood and I'm tired of this house. It's been a great house but I'm ready for something bigger and has more of a setup to entertain large groups of people.
In the past few months as I toyed with this idea God lead me to an area that I really connected with and would love to move to. I've been praying for confirmation that I'm doing what God's calling me to do. So far, all signs point to, yes. In the past few weeks my thoughts have been shaken and my certainty has been questioned in this decision.
Last night I received an invite from my friend Shawna to go to church with her and then go to the church's "Fall Festival Gathering" to fellowship and have some fun. Well, it was clearly in God's plan to bring me back into focus for what I'm doing here. The service was awesome as usual and then I enjoyed so much of the fellowship afterwards.
Getting to hang out with Shawna is always awesome. Her friend who came to visit (Christy), Shawna and I went to K-Rogers (that's pronounced Kay Rogers... so Shawna says) to get some stuff for the afternoon. Then Christy had to go home and Shawna and I talked until it was time for the gathering. Times like today make me really appreciate and thank God for bringing Shawna (and the entire clan really) back into my life, I'm truly blessed.
I think that it is awesome that I'm building (or at least I think I am) a deeper friendship with Casey and Derek. I first met them before they had kids when they were working at a youth camp where I was on staff. Then time passed for quite some time and I recently met back up with them when Shawna had me visit her church where they too attended. I really enjoy Casey and Derek and their kids; they're all a riot and I look forward to getting to know them better.
It turned out to be an awesome day not only personally but also weather-wise (which is rare for Ohio). The entire time I was there God seemed to keep me quiet (I didn't say much) so I could observe. I laughed a lot and observed this environment that is so different to me.
As I drove home in silence, I thought about all this and God seemed to nudge me and say,
"Are you ready for all this? Are you ready to trust me?".I asked myself and God the question,
"What is keeping me from this?"The answer I seemed to come up with wasn't the fact I had to sell a house, relocate my life to another county, change everything, make sure I had the money to do all this... nope, the answer was simply me lacking the faith for it all. I've always heard said,
"If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it."I sometimes forget this. God brings me to something and I stand up and run off like a child trying to bring myself through things. It is when I step back, take my hands off, and say "it is yours Lord" do I then find everything turning out ok. Pastor Steve said today something about change and how all change will instill some fear into us. I, being the "manly man" I try to be, took on the fearless approach. However, it is true, as I begin this process, as much of the picture I have, there is still a huge unknown and I have to be ready to face it. So I sat here tonight and began to think about everything. Do I really want to commit myself to taking on this "new life" God has put before me? My answer, "Yes." I can't wait to see the story that God will unfold in my life and I felt it was time to publicly profess what is going on and I'll be blogging about this journey in my life as I go forward. Good night and God Bless, - J
Priceless
Pay for Parking: .................................................................... $3.00
Pay for Haunted House Ticket: .......................................... $15.00
See an actor jump up, over a railing, into your friend's crotch, have another friend almost lose complete control of her bladder due to laughter and laugh yourself to death:
PRICELESS
Let us begin at the beginning. We meet at my house on Friday evening and begin our night of haunted housing. I drive and we head off to this "new" haunted house. Let's just say that the parking was crappy and it looked very... run down. So we skipped it and went to House of Nightmares (one of my personal favorites). We begin our journey by going through this big air-filled walls path where you have to push your way through it (it would kill someone who is claustrophobic). K A T Y!!! exclaims in the middle,"I wonder if this is what it feels like to be born?"We all laugh. I'm holding Katy's hand and she's holding Josh's as we walk through the next part of the haunted house. Only thing scaring me is the "air" that you periodically hear (and not really scare as much as catch off guard). Then comes the best part... So we're walking through this haunted house when we approach this bridge. Pecking order would consist of Josh, K A T Y!!! and me taking up the rear. So this monster, who is trying his hardest to scare us, jumps up. Now at this very second we thought he was just going to jump to get our attention/scare us. No, no, no...It is then he comes FLIPPING over the railing and right into Josh's crotch. Slight laughter ensued. Then I believe the conversation went like this: Josh: “Geez DUDE are you ok?” K A T Y!!!: “He wanted to see your cock.” John: *laughing so hard I'm starting to cry* Then I believe K A T Y!!! began to do some dance to the bladder gods because she was complaining about pee and not wetting her pants and then was laughing and half sitting, half dancing around the bridge like a crazy person. By this time the monster has given in and is laughing and we're all laughing. After this we enter the clown zone. Well, K A T Y!!! hates clowns. I am in the back of this line and screaming out K A T Y!!!'s name. Well we get to this room with two clowns and they're laughing and saying STAND ON THE GREEN DOT, K A T Y!!! For those of you who haven't met me in person, let me fill you in on a secret. I have ZERO upper body strength so pushing K A T Y!!! onto the dot and keeping her there wasn't easy (she's strong or I'm weak one of the two). Thankfully Josh helped me but she did put up a good fight. Just when she looks up a clow comes FLYING out of the corner RIGHT up to her FACE. This is where I start to laugh REALLY hard. K A T Y!!! did not find this as funny. So if you're a Columbusite or passing through, make sure you stop at House of Nightmares, I highly recommend. Then there was Terror Park... DISAPPOINTMENT. We waited in line for over an hour, it wasn't well staffed and the actors that were ther, were new... or really bad. So I would skip that. I'm so excited because we're going to 7 Floors of Hell next week. I hope this is really as good as the internet/TV says. It will be a fun trip, I'm sure. Well, that's about it folks. Watch later for another update. Later, - J
The Mirror
I'm buzzing through the I-71 / I-70 merge tonight as I went back to where I grew up (ah, the ghetto) and it came to a sudden stop. If you've ever drive in Columbus or live here you know that no one in this town can deal with traffic; more so if it is on the freeway. So people are flying all over the interchange trying to get in a lane that was at least moving.
So I'm weaving my way through traffic when out of no where this white Honda Accord pulls in behind me. I look up in my mirror as a precausion because I've been rear-ended and have been in plenty of close calls that were prevented because I moved.
I look up and happen to make eye contact with the guy behind me. Now, he looked normal... nothing strange that I could see about him. He was driving a white car but I'll let that slide. He had a OSU sticker in the back window and a OSU parking pass hanging from his rear view mirror (so I think we can assume that he is an OSU student).
I guess he thought I was looking for more than just if he was going to hit my car or not because he then decided to make sure that I saw him no matter what. Maybe he thought he knew me or maybe it was the fact that I am 1/2 Asian driving a typical Asian vehicle (I was in the Acura not the Saab) around his age and he thought I was flirting with him by looking in my mirror.
Now, before anyone assumes or jokes... I'm straight. So I'm sitting there waiting to change lanes and look in my sideview mirror to change lanes. It is here that I've found he's managed to almost HANG OUT HIS WINDOW to look DIRECTLY in my mirror and SMILE as soon as I look.
I'm a little wierded out by this so I see my opening and slide into the open spot, which was barely big enough for my car... He puts his signal on and the dumb idiot lets him behind me. So I look up to see what all the commotion is about and there he is again smiling at me. So now I'm thinking,
"Enough is enough."I try my best to get rid of this guy but he just keeps following me trying to get my attention and trying to flirt with me in the mirror. At this point I'm half disgusted and half laughing because this guy must be desperate. So I see my chance, there is an opening in the fast lane with a straight shot and I move over into tap shift, change lanes, and take off. It is in these moments where a 3.2 Liter Acura V6 will outrun a 2.4 Liter Honda V4 anyday. I finally get away but did watch the guy try and follow me until I finally got off at my exit. Question is, WHY COULDN'T THAT BE A GIRL? Huh? Is that because then my life would be too easy? I'm thinking so. God has decided I need a challenge in life and doesn't need cute girls to flirt with me while I'm looking in the rear view mirror. Well, I take that back. There was this one girl at this concert who came up behind me at this concert I was recently at with K A T Y!!! and Josh. She stopped and was just about had half her body on me and asks,
"How do I get down there?"As she motioned to the "mosh pit"... I turned around and was shocked to see a semi-tall blonde about my age, with her hand on my shoulder and I stammered out in the most manly voice I could
"OVER THERE..."She smiled and told me thanks and I never saw her again. -Sigh- Just thought I'd share that with you all for a good laugh... I still get a kick out of it. Until tomorrow... - J
K A T Y!!! HAS A REAL BLOG NOW!
So, not to discredit her old blogs but K A T Y!!! has moved into the world of what I like to call "real blogging". She is now the proud owner of www.justkaty.com and you can not only see her new stuff but also her archives from the blogs of the past. So, for all who know (or even if you don't) K A T Y!!! stop by her new online home at www.justkaty.com!

Quote of the Day
John: "So, it's super duty raining down here... Did I just say 'super duty'?"
This is what happens when John tries to say super heavy and crosses super and heavy duty to get super duty. I believe Katy found this funny.
Also, if you've been keeping up with the Acura saga I received a second e-mail in my gmail account from Lindsay Acura. Now, maybe they haven't realized by the blog that I'm an IT professional but I looked at the message headers to find out that the second e-mail was actually a non "form generated" e-mail though it did sound like it. I saw that this was due to the fact the "form generated" e-mails I get from them come from a totally different host (though the reply is the same). It looks like I've been discovered and got the attention of someone.
Well, I'm going to be contacting them soon enough regarding my recent service. I'll keep everyone posted.
Night,

I’ve crossed the “old” line
I thought I was old when:
... I turned 18
... I moved out
... I purchased my first car
... I got a respectful and well paying job
... I started being responsible
... I stayed out late
... I traveled out of state alone
... I turned 20
... I no longer related with teenagers
... I saw my little cousins no longer be little
No, none of those made me old... however, I have found what makes me old...
I listen to music of the 90s
I used to laugh at my older friends who would listen to music of their generation. Not the music that was out when they were born but much like my mom who listens to music of her childhood they would listen to and love music that they listened to when during their childhood. I always though that I would never be that person. I would never listen to the songs of the 90s. Then I saw something under the "decades" section of iTunes... One Hit Wonders of the 90s.
Then I discovered how much of the music I listen to is from the 90s and enjoy it. See my sidenote for a sample of what I've been listening to for a great laugh. Just thought I'd share that note... More later this week on other stuff.
Night,
